Tailor-Made Study Trips for International Master’s Students at SML

Short-term intensive programs, so-called study trips, play an increasingly important role at the School of Management and Law (SML). Partner universities and other universities as well as business organizations appreciate the full-service packages offered by the Department of International Business (International Relations). The study trips last between one and two weeks, combining academic lectures with company visits and providing opportunities to network with Swiss industry leaders.

Students are looking for more than a regular study semester abroad when they think about gaining some international experience. This is what Prof. Isabelle Zulauf-Poli, Head of International Relations, and Michael Farley, Head of International Development & Projects, hear whenever they introduce the concept of tailor-made study trips to universities at international education conferences. There is an increasing demand from universities worldwide to offer students such an international learning opportunity.

Added Value to a Regular Semester Abroad
This is especially interesting for students at the Master’s and MBA levels. During the last three years, the SML has hosted, among others, MBA groups from the UK (University of Leeds), the US (Florida Southern College), and Hong Kong (Hong Kong Baptist University). “What appeals to our visiting students most when they join a study trip to the SML is the opportunity to networking in person with high-level executives of Swiss and international companies, combined with the academic input they receive on Swiss success,” says Prof. Isabelle Zulauf-Poli.ABB, Victorinox, Renault, SIX Swiss Exchange, Sprüngli, Roche, Microsoft – Only some of the companies that international students have visited during the recent study trips to the SML. In addition, they heard presentations by high-caliber external speakers. Guest lectures have included Elmar Mock, co-founder of the swatch watch, who lectured about entrepreneurship, and Mark Dittli, Editor-in-Chief at “Finanz und Wirtschaft,” who offered first-hand insights into the “Future of Swiss Banking” and “New Finance Technologies”.

Company visits reflect the strategic topics dealt with in the presentations offered at the SML. These cover aspects of banking and finance, luxury management, innovation management, and other issues that explain how doing business in Switzerland and Europe works.

“The Zurich study tour was an amazing learning experience, giving our MBA students an entirely fresh perspective on Swiss academia, business and culture. The tour was expertly coordinated by ZHAW with a perfect mix of inspiring academic lectures and impressive company visits hosted by high profile executives –  we all came away influenced by our experiences and motivated to ‘be more Swiss’!”

Catherine Porter, MBA Programmes Officer at Leeds University Business School

In addition to strengthening the relationship of the SML with its partner universities, these study trips help to improve our international visibility and reputation and pave the way for joint research and consultancy projects in the future.
