SML Emerging Market Fieldtrip 2018 to China and Vietnam

Sixteen students in their final semester at the ZHAW School of Management and Law (SML) embarked on this study trip to China and Vietnam following their attendance of the seminar “Doing Business in Emerging Markets”. The objective of this study trip is to get an actual onsite view of the growing market power of the Asian economies as it is more than likely that today’s students will be working with Asian customers, suppliers and shareholders in their future professional careers.

After travelling 2600 km from Beijing to Hanoi from 30 June to 14 July, 18 students and two lecturers look back with great gratitude on a challenging but highly rewarding journey. It was a unique experience to meet so many entrepreneurial people, to visit the Swiss embassies in China and Vietnam, high-tech Chinese companies in Beijing, the South Western University of Finance and Economics, consulting practices and financial institutions in Hong Kong, manufacturing companies in Chengdu and Chongqing, an entertainment complex in Macau and textile companies in Hanoi. In addition, we were able to lecture on and discuss topics such as family business and wealth management, innovative distribution concepts as well as possible consequences of the harsh trade dispute evolving between the US and China with professors and students, financial experts and company representatives alike.

There is no doubt that the objectives of getting actual onsite insight into the rapidly growing Asian economies, where potential future business partners and employers are based, were fully achieved as the feedback from companies and students confirmed.

Despite a packed timetable, we were also able to take in the natural beauty of China and Vietnam, to visit the old cultural heritage monuments and to experience the new traffic and building achievements in Asia’s mega cities.

We sincerely thank all contributors for their generous support in making this unique journey possible. View the full travel-blog of the SML Emerging Market Fieldtrip 2018 here.
