Some 70 ZHAW students and staff met on 1 October to network and speak English at ESSE Musicbar. A group of Angolan exchange students had accepted our invitation to be the special guests that evening. They talked about the role of music and dance at social occasions and as social and political commentary. Traditional styles of Sub-Saharan Africa, mixed with modern styles like hip hop and house and the influence of other Portuguese-speaking countries give Angolan music its unique flavor. Their spectacular program featured videos, dance demonstrations, and a song performed live by an impromptu band. Here are some examples of the most popular musical styles, semba, kizomba, and kuduro:
